While most of the country was at the beach or having a cookout for Memorial
Day weekend, a group of race junkies were at their favorite place--Summit
Point. And I just wanted to say thank you to all the Mid-Atlantic
Roadracing Club members who helped make the weekend a success!
A full day of CCS races on Friday got the weekend off to a rockin' start,
and it just got faster from there with more CCS races and FUSA qualifying
and sprint races on Saturday and Sunday. As the morning chill wore off on
Saturday, it was evident that the weather conditions along with the
participation of national-level riders made the perfect combination for a
new track record to be set. So it was not unexpected when the track record
was broken during qualifying on Saturday--but then it was broken again, and
again, and again! Everyone was looking forward to more of the same on
Sunday, but the weather turned into torrential rain, winds, hail and
nonstop lightning, calling an early end to the weekend.
Through the good times (the track records and the awesome racing), to the
bad (such as four massive oil cleanups on Sunday, reminiscent of the "old
days" when "Valdez" spills were a regular occurrence), to the ugly (the
near-tornado conditions on Sunday afternoon) the MARRC Safety Crew was
there, with between 30 and 40 cornerworkers each day.
The support of other MARRC volunteers helped made sure it was a great
weekend: Jane Weiss (and black lab Buddy) in the Info Booth; Melinda Beggs
with the Volunteer Incentive Program for the workers on Saturday night; and
Chaplains Bill Powers, Tom Moyer and Carol Moyer, ready as always to
support our members in need throughout the weekend. And adding a festive
air to the weekend, the Stringfield family decorated the cafe area for
Memorial Day and chef Will "EmerWill" Astle capped off a weekend full of
great food for the MARRC volunteers with a traditional Memorial Day cookout.
Thanks again to everyone who helped out! I look forward to seeing lots of
you at Summit in about ten more days for our MARRC Track Day on Friday,
June 7, and at the WERA regional races on June 8 and 9. And as always,
check out www.marrc.org for more information about Track Day, Safety Crew,
roadracing or other activities in MARRC.
Ride fast and have fun! See you soon,
Wendy Leland
